2 HA PRICKLY PEAR FARM IN MEYERTON
Driving through the sliding gate it feels like entering peace and tranquillity. The sparkling pool and Lapa are ideal for the warm summer days. In peak season a prickly pear fruit could sell for R7, or between R46 666 and R70 000 a ton, with the fruit weighing between 100 grams and 150 grams.
However, in the midseason during January and February, when there could be a sufficient supply, a cactus pear can sell for R4 or between R26 000 and R40 000 a ton.
Prickly pear fruit is stocked by the major retail chains such as Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Shoprite, and Food Lover’s Market as well as by local fruit shops, greengrocers, and farmers’ markets. Currently the seller supply to some of these outlets.
The fruit is also used extensively in other food products, like juice, jam, jelly, and chutney; and the cladodes can be pickled and eaten in salads. Cactus pear fruit can even be made into beer, wine or liqueur.
